Board of Directors

TESSA's Board is responsible for making decisions in a manner consistent with that of a prudent person.  This means Board members act in a reasonable way, like that of any "ordinary" person.  TESSA's Board acts in good faith and in the best interests of the organization.  They ensure the organization operates within legal parameters, and TESSA's own rules, regulations, mission and bylaws.

TESSA's Senior Staff (as of June 2008)

Michelle Valdez, Executive Director
Ms. Valdez has worked in the field of family violence for over 11 years. Her work experience includes work in the Fourth Judicial District Courts with families experiencing the co-occurrence of domestic violence and child maltreatment through a federally funded grant (the ‘Greenbook Grant’), worked as the Community Outreach Coordinator for the Children’s Advocacy Center of the Pikes Peak Region and was employed by TESSA as the Operations Manager for DVERT (the Domestic Violence Enhanced Response Team) for over four years. In 2004, Ms. Valdez re-joined the TESSA staff as the Director of Advocacy Services and remained in the position until 2007, when she was hired as the Executive Director. Ms. Valdez is also on the Board of Director’s of CCASA (the Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault) and received her Bachelors of Science degree in Psychology in 1994 from the University of Wyoming.

Dani Francis, Director of Finance
Ms. Francis has worked as an accountant and financial manager for over 15 years. As a staff accountant, financial analyst, and financial manager, she has performed a variety of audit, financial and accounting functions. She holds a B.A. in Business, summa cum laude, from Colorado College.
 
Shawna Kemppaninen, Director of Development

Ms. Kemppainen joined the TESSA team in June 2008 with eight years of experience working in fund development, public policy advocacy and journalism. Formerly the Chief Philanthropy Officer at Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado, she spearheaded fundraising efforts for key programs as well as a capital campaign, and she worked on a national team of anti-hunger advocates to pass legislation providing more healthy food for hungry families, children and seniors. Ms. Kemppainen holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Arizona State University’s Cronkite School of Journalism and has worked for both the Colorado Springs Business Journal and the Gazette.

Patrick Shargel, Clinical Director

Mr. Shargel has worked in the field of domestic violence and sexual assault for 8 years. He has a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs and a M.A. in Counseling and Human Services from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. Mr. Shargel is a Licensed Professional Counselor, a National Certified Counselor, and a State Approved Domestic Violence Offender Treatment Provider who works with victims and offenders of domestic violence.
 
Andrea Wood, Director of Advocacy

Ms. Andrea Wood has over 10 years experience working with families and domestic violence issues.  In her own private practice, she provides home-based services, counseling, and crisis intervention to parents and children dealing with violence.  In the past, she has worked with the Department of Human Services as a Care Coordination Manager responsible for authorizing and ensuring services for indigent and uninsured populations.  She has also been the Director of several programs including Family Preservation through Youth Ventures, LLC and Program Manager at the Cleo Wallace Center.  Ms. Wood is a Licensed Professional Counselor (since 2002) and received her Masters Degree in Counseling and Human Services in 1999 through UCCS.
